    Annual Meeting Highlights
    By Chris Bredeson

The 2004 Annual Meeting was a great success. Although attendance was lower than usual, a lot was accomplished (see minutes printed in this newsletter). On behalf of the HHAA Board, I want to thank Egon Kamarasy for his hospitality. A great time was had by all who participated. Egret Lake Farm, Egon’s farm, is in a beautiful setting in Southern Illinois.

In addition to covering a number of business items, several other events took place over the weekend as well. After most everyone arrived Friday evening we had a wonderful family-style dinner at the Giant City Lodge at Giant City Park. Saturday morning we toured the Southern Illinois University (SIU) Horse Center. We were fortunate to have Dr. Sheryl King, Director of the Physiology and Metabolism Laboratory, as our tour guide. Dr. King gave us an overview of the equine program at SIU, with a focus on stable management and breeding. It was interesting to hear some of her research findings related to treating equine uterine infections and stallion management.

One of the highlights for me was fox hunting with the Wolf Creek Hunt Club Sunday morning. Egon graciously offered to provide a mount for any HHAA members wishing to join the hunt. I took him up on his offer, joining Egon and his son Eugene on the hunt. Those choosing not to ride could follow the hunt via car to watch the hounds work and enjoy the beautiful scenery. The hunt was followed by a traditional hunt breakfast at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Winston Throgmorton of Stone Hall Farm.

As usual, the best part of every annual meeting is catching up with fellow Hungarian horse breeders and owners and looking enjoying everyone’s pictures, stories, and horses. Of course, we saw Egon’s horses, which included Hungarians, part-Shagyas, Trakehners, and Thoroughbreds. Linda Rudolphi brought two horses, including a very nice Budapest daughter and a beautiful Felver mare named Duna. Karen Andraska made the long drive from Wisconsin with her stallion H. Bartok for all to enjoy. Bartok was even more beautiful in person than in the pictures I have seen – plus his temperament seemed great. Next year I’d like to encourage as many members as possible to join us in Washington State for the annual meeting which will most likely be September 16-18, 2005. If you’ve never attended on of these meetings, you don’t know what you’re missing out on!

    HUMOR FROM MARTHA THIRY
    (daughter of Laszlo Monostory)
A little boy was overheard praying: “Lord, if you can’t make me a better boy, don’t worry about it. I’m having a real good time like I am.

1 Karen Andraska’s stallion Hungarian Bartok (*Szeplak XVIII x Hungarian Mazurka) at the meeting in Illinois. He is 16.3hh. Karen said he qualified for the USDF Regionals at 3rd level. The *Szeplak XVIII semen was imported from Hungary in our exchange with the Kisber Association.

We saw Hungarian Mazurka perform at Pat Vogel’s a t our Wisconsin meeting. Everyone was impressed with both her beauty and her performance. Her grandsire and dam were Hungarian Hadur and Hungarian Keeper. Keeper (H. Big John x H. Becses) was named by Steve when he first saw her – “She’s a Keeper”. She proved worthy of his expectations.

    Wanda’s note:
Officers elected at the August 30th telephone board meeting were:
President – Chris Bredeson, Treasurer – Wanda Cooksley. Pat Vogel and Rick Brandt were nominated as vice-president and Heidi Christenson as secretary. The latter two were left for annual meeting because some of the people involved were not available for consultation.

HHAA Combined Board and Membership Meeting
    Carbondale, Illinois
    October 23, 2004

The meeting was called to order at 3:35 pm, CDT, by President Chris Bredeson. Board members participating were Pat Vogel, Egon Kamarasy, Rick Brandt, Linda Rudolphi, and Chris Bredeson. Charlene Summers voted via telephone to make a Board quorum. Members participating were Henrietta Morey and Karen Andraska.

Chris went over the agenda and asked for additions. Minutes of the October 2003 combined membership and board meeting held in Nebraska were reviewed and a motion to approve was made by Pat Vogel and seconded by Rick Brandt. Motion carried.

Board meeting of August 30, 2004 via telephone conference call minutes were reviewed. Minutes called for finalization of elections regarding the number of Vice Presidents we would have as two qualified candidates were nominated. Rick Brandt withdrew his candidacy. Motion was made to have only one VP and for that to be Pat Vogel. This motion was made by Egon Kamarasy and seconded by Rick Brandt. Motion carried. Discussion also took place regarding position of Secretary. After discussion, a motion was made to have Karen Andraska serve as Assistant Secretary by Rick Brandt and was seconded by Pat Vogel. Motion carried. Once the elections from the August 30, 2004 conference call were finalized and confirmed, Linda Rudolphi motioned that the minutes of the August 30, 2004 Board meeting be approved, Rick Brandt seconded, and the motion carried.

The Registrar’s report was given by Linda Rudolphi on behalf of Registrar Wanda Cooksley. Several reports from the three HHAA books were circulated and discussed with some statistics reviewed. In 2003, there were 33 horses registered with HHAA. Of the stallions discussed, Hadur is the most prolific with 104 offspring registered with HHAA. Linda asked members present to note corrections, additions, or deletions to the detailed reports circulated. Egon thanked her for her hard work. Chris requested that Linda make a back-up file of all registry data to be forwarded to him for safe keeping should the data stored in her computer(s) be lost for any reason. Linda agreed. Pat Vogel motioned to approve the Registrar’s report with corrections, which was seconded by Rick Brandt. Motion carried.

Chris Bredeson read the financial reports prepared by Wanda Cooksley, Treasurer, for 2003 and year to date for 2004 (10/1/04). Motion was made by Egon Kamarasy to accept the report and seconded by Linda. Motion carried.

The membership report prepared by Heidi Christenson was read by Chris Bredeson. The Membership Booklet was discussed and a motion was made by Rick Brandt to accept the report as read. Linda Rudolphi seconded and the motion carried. Further discussion took place regarding the role of the Secretary and Assistant Secretary. Rick Brandt motioned to have the Secretary focus on membership issues and for the Assistant Secretary to be responsible for other duties. Motion was seconded by Egon and carried.

Linda Rudolphi reported on logo sales. With $426 in the account, there are currently no products left for sale. Several ideas for new sale items were discussed. Members were encouraged to send ideas, vendor names, prices, and availability of items to Linda for further review. Motion was made by Rick Brandt to accept the report and seconded by Henrietta Morey. Motion carried.

HHAA’s future with the Performance Horse Registry (PHR) was discussed in light of the PHR’s lack of responsiveness and follow through on contractual issues. Egon made a motion as a follow up to the 2003 meeting, to discontinue our business relationship with the PHR and continue with the same registration fees, with the $35 normally designated for the PHR to be used for HHAA promotion, development and operations. Pat Vogel seconded and the motion carried.

The HHAA website was discussed. Pat Vogel motioned to hire a professional website manager to publish and maintain the website. This motion was seconded by Egon and amended by Chris Bredeson to have a website content committee and coordinator. The motion, with the amendment was seconded by Rick Brandt and carried. It was determined that the following members would be asked to serve on this committee: Wanda Cooksley, Linda Rudolphi, and Val Sivertson. Henrietta Morey was asked and accepted the role of being the website coordinator. Henrietta will research website vendors and make a presentation with a recommendation to the Board in approximately 30 days. Board members also reviewed a website draft prepared by Val Sivertson and very much appreciated the hard work she had put into this project. This draft will be forwarded to the website vendor when chosen.

Branding was discussed and a motion was made by Linda Rudolphi to appoint a committee to develop a branding protocol. This was seconded by Pat Vogel and carried. Committee members recommended were: George Cooksley, Charlene Summers, and Rick Brandt. A motion to develop the branding protocol by January 31, 2005 was made by Pat Vogel, seconded by Rick Brandt, and carried.

A discussion about DNA testing for parentage verification was led by Pat Vogel. After some discussion, Pat made a motion to pursue DNA testing further and make a more detailed presentation for a final decision about DNA testing at next year’s annual meeting. Seconded by Rick Brandt and carried.

Short and long range goals were discussed and finalized as follows:

      Increase active membership in HHAA

Pat Vogel made a motion to accept the Goals as discussed, seconded by Linda and motion carried.

HHAA annual meeting for 2005 discussed. Most likely to be held second or third weekend in September in the Olympia, Washington area. Will be hosted by Liberty Farms Sport Horse Company. Feedback was solicited regarding acceptable dates.

Brief discussion took place regarding the Rare Breeds Conservancy. It was agreed that this issue would be tabled for a future meeting. Chris Bredeson will do some research on the advantages/disadvantages of belonging to such an organization and report his findings to the Board.

Rick Brandt moved to adjourn the meeting. Seconded by all. Motion carried.

AGAIN, OUR CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE WINNERS. IT TAKES A LOT OF EFFORT TO DO THE NECESSARY SHOWING IN ADDITION TO THE TRAINING OR BREEDING THE HORSE. AND YES, BOOKWORK HAS TO BE DONE!

In 2002 the Northwest Sport Horse Breeders Association created an award to honor the top producing dressage and hunter sires in the region. Since its inception, Hungarian stallions have dominated the dressage sire award. The 2002 inaugural award went to H.S. Kivalo (Rubin x H. Nagyaszony by H. Keszthely). In both 2003 and 2004 H.S. So Rare has been the #1 producer of horses in the dressage breed classes in the Pacific Northwest. H.S. So Rare’s offspring, such as H.S. Randevu, H.S. Rare Charm, and H.S. Szobrasz are a few of the foals who contributed points for their sire. In addition to good movement and type, H.S. So Rare’s foals are gaining a reputation for their excellent temperaments. Owners of H.S. So Rare foals all share their enthusiasm for this inherited trait. This is especially exciting now that his oldest get, H.S. Randevu, is now going well under saddle as evidenced by his #1 ranking in the United States for 3 yr old dressage colts under saddle in Materiale.

H.S. So Rare is owned by Chris Bredeson and Henrietta Morey and was bred by Charlene Summers. H.S. So Rare is standing at Liberty Farms Sport Horse Company, Olympia, WA.

HS Cordelia #HS 206 (Cord, Swedish Warmblood x Hungarian Zsa Zsanna #1264.

Bianca Jackson, Moses Lake, Washington, niece of Nilsa Nippolt-Zeman reported that her filly HS Cordelia won the 2004 filly class at the USDF/Cosequin Breeders Championship Series

Qualifier Show in August in Spokane. She also won the Hungarian Warmblood Breed Class. She also reported that the 2004 Colt Class winner was also a Hungarian horse (see Val Sivertson’s report). Bianca also owns Hungarian Chinook (*Shador, Shagya x Hungarian China). She has shown him through 3rd level. “He is really a neat horse, I love him and will never sell him. He is very sensitive and it takes a special rider to show him. He can get really silly, especially in new places. Nilsa gave him to me because nobody would or could get along with him”. (Note – we have had experience with horses who had been unfairly treated who became very difficult. The sensitivity which we love about them can also be a problem with the wrong rider or trainer.)

    ATTENTION

As of the 2003 foal crop there will be no more horses recorded in the PHR because we were not receiving registrations numbers. They were not living up to the terms of our contract. Note that the vote was also to retain the $65 registration fee so that remains the same.

Linda Rudolphi will be the assistant registrar. Everything will come to me as usual. I will process them as usual and the applications will be sent to Linda for a second checking and printing the certificates on the computer program. You will then receive the certificate from her.

We have a good supply of the HEAVENLY HORSES BOOKS, both hard and soft cover. The price is $10, soft cover and $15 hard cover, which includes postage.

Charlene Summers’ new telephone number is 253-843-3299. Summervale Farm has completed their move to their new farm.

    From Linda Rudolphi
    10/24/2004

I just had to write and brag on Chris and Marty Power – this is the best advertisement for all of out horses!

To give you some background – In the spring of 2003 Marty came to look at the horses and fell in love with H. Bikaver (H. Gyemant x H. Tiszta). I had gelded Bikaver because 2 stallions were one too many for me and *Budapest was pouting. Marty had not ridden for years but the kids were grown and she wanted to get back to riding. Her husband Chris came along and was trying to make all this work out on a spreadsheet – which I promptly told him to throw away, otherwise his life would be miserable. Spreadsheets and budgets do not go hand in hand with horses!

That summer Marty took riding lessons and progressed very quickly. Chris, who had never ridden in his life, rode once in a while. Well, Marty thought if she had another horse Chris could ride with her. So she finds a gelding at Daunna Sellers – SA Te Jat by Daunna’s Shagya stallion Bayram out of her Arab mare SA Enif. Bayram has the same dam as *Budapest – both are *Biala sons.

Chris started riding Bikaver with Marty on conditioning rides as Te was a little green and more confident with Bikaver along. They decided to try distance riding. Well, as of last week-end Chris (he did not ride before – husband who has now thrown away his spreadsheet) is in #1 place on Bikaver in the UMECRA rookie division and Marty is #2 on Te. AND Chris is in the Top Ten in the Heavyweight open, competitive against some seasoned competitors on Bikaver.

For those who are not familiar with UMECRA competitive, it is a little different, and some think harder than other competitive rides. The average pace is usually 7 miles per hour or more and respirations do count. Bikaver is steady, steady with Pulse/Respiration readings of 40/8, 36/8, etc. Te is still young but getting more consistent everyday with 44/20, 44/12, etc. In UMECRA if you don’t have a horse with low respirations you won’t place. And keep in mind that is without the use of water to bring down rates.

The UMECRA season ends the last week-end in October so Chris and Marty have a couple of more rides to keep their placings. The rest of the rides will be up in Wisconsin and Minnesota, Marty said they had ice on the buckets last week-end. This is where the tough get tougher ?

I am so proud of both of them.

Not to be forgotten my Aunt JoAnne is also starting out a Hungarian gelding this year - H. WineGlass Bandol and he is accumulating several Limited Distance endurance miles. Bandol is by Bikaver out of an Arab mare of mine who was Champion Hunter horse at a Class A show this past spring. She has been a trail horse and broodmare but Kayla Reimer wanted to show her – who knew she would be a champion.

Kayla has also been riding the Hungarian and Shagya Sportlo registered H. WineGlass Bacchus in several dressage classes and went on his first competitive ride this fall. Bacchus, a.k.a. “Ben”, is by Bikaver out of my *Budapest daughter who placed high last year in the Trakehner inspections. Ben completed his first 30 mile competitive very strong and looking for more! I was riding with Kayla on my Hungarian mare H. Duna (full sister to Bandol) on her first ride. We thought we would use the buddy system. Well Ben let us know he didn’t need a buddy and had his eyes on the horizon.

We will keep you posted with the year-end results. Keep your fingers crossed!

    Chris Power and Hungarian Bikaver

HE already walks through swampy ground, walks through deep ditches, picks his way through holes and hillocks, walks across tarps, loads in the trailer, clips, picks up his feet, goes right up to the mailbox when I open it, doesn’t spook at flapping tarps – I’m running out of things to throw at him. - - - - - I got him as a dressage prospect and maybe to take hunter/jumper lessons on, but he’s so good about trail stuff, he’ll probably also be my trail horse and will help me when I round up cattle on my friend’s ranch. May even take him team penning.”
Good luck Kim and “Reo”, you have an interesting and busy lives ahead with the added joy of working together.

CORRECTION: Jeannine Brucha called me to correct the spelling of her name, which needs two ns. Also she owns and shows HPB Windtanzer #HPB 192 (HS Wistar x Kachina) instead of Karen Lenberg who is his breeder. My apologies. It is correct in the records.

I have news that Alix Coleman has been in Middleburg, Virginia working on a book and a film of the once in a lifetime convocation of 27 four in hands put to either Road Coaches or Park Drags. Alix has done horse photography for many magazines and books. She has been official photographer for Dressage at Devon for many years. If you have watched the four-in-hands you know how exciting it is to watch them and their performance classes are breathtaking. We are very fortunate that many years ago Alix became interested in the Hungarian horses and helped promote them when it was desperately needed.

    SALUTE TO EXSAR

We extend our sympathy to Kathy and Tom Henry on the loss of Kathy’s beloved Trakehner stallion, Exsar (who died suddenly on July 30, 2004 during his workout. He sired many foals who are successful hunters, jumpers, dressage and event horses. His last public appearance was at the Cleveland Grand Prix, July 25, 2004.

Tom and Kathy lost their Hungarian mare, Hungarian Biszi in July 2002 after 17 years with them.
“Exsar was the horse of a lifetime, and we were privileged to have him. He was greatly loved and will be sorely missed.”

    Remembering

When given some space to fill, I decided to look in the files for something. The mid-October meeting, 1995 in Wisconsin was the first in the book so I enjoyed reliving it with the pictures.

The tack room picture shows only a small area of the large collection of beautifully polished tack. The Hungarian harness is made with a fine black leather with lots of decoration. We had lunch in the tack room.

The first morning was at David and Heidi Christenson’s Family Ties Farm at Racine. They first became interested in Hungarian horses when they purchased Margit Bessenyey’s bay driving team. By this time the horses were very old and retired but looking good.

The picture of George branding the grey mare shows Heidi’s immaculate barn with each horse’s stall identified by name.

The three grey mares showing off the Hungarian bridles are left to right, Hungarian Marika (H. Pajkos x Rissan’s Mariah, TB), H. Muzika (H. Hadur x H. Keeper) held by Karen Andraska, and H. Bors (H. Hadur x H. Bajos).

The bay horse is H. Shazam (H. Pajkos x Try’s This and That, TB) held by Pat’s trainer. Pat showed Pajkos but his pictures are all too dark.
